“Barbie” Becomes 2023’s Box-Office Queen

Warner Bros. Pictures

With $1.36 billion at the global box office, Greta Gerwig’s fantasy-comedy “Barbie” has now officially overtaken Universal and Illumination’s animated adventure “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”.

The Margot Robbie-led film over took the $1.35 billion that the Nintendo game adaptation racked up in its theatrical run back in April, and now stands as the highest-grossing film of the year – both domestically and worldwide.

The pink blockbuster has accumulated a massive $600 million in North America and $760 million overseas to date – and all in the space of six weeks. It debuted with $162 million domestically and remained the No. 1 movie for four consecutive weekends.

Currently, the film sits as the 14th-biggest domestic release and 15th-biggest global release in history along with being Warner Bros. Pictures’ highest-grossing domestic and worldwide release title of all time.

It also helped power the Summer box-office to $4 billion for the first time since the pandemic began. Half of that amount can be attributed to the Barbenheimer phenomenon as “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” together generated over $2 billion in global box office revenue.

Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” broke more records this weekend too – having now become the second-biggest R-rated film in history with $787 million worldwide.

The news comes as “Puppet Master” horror franchise creator Charles Band announced (via JoBlo) this week plans to produce an indie film called “Barbenheimer” about a group of fed-up female dolls attempting to build an atomic bomb. That film is targeting a Christmas 2023 release on Prime Video.
