The first projections are out for the second weekend of the event known as ‘Barbenheimer’ with Warner Bros. “Barbie” and Universal’s “Oppenheimer” are expected to once again dominate.
According to Deadline, both films are expected to see comparable falls in their sophomore outings with “Barbie” tipped to drop 55% to $72 million whilst “Oppeneheimer” is expected to fall 56% to $35 million.
That’s a drop on par with “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” (54%), “The Little Mermaid” (57%), “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (54%) and is decidedly better than some other tentpoles this year including “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” which declined 65%, “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” at 70% and “The Flash” at 72%.
The two movies combined are expected to make around $107 million between them and have a lock on the top two spots at the box-office.
Its only real challenger this week is Disney’s live-action “Haunted Mansion” film which is expected to have a start of around $30 million.
It comes ahead of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” which opens Wednesday, August 2nd and is expected to take the attention of young males with a $40 million Wednesday through Sunday start looking likely.
However, as was shown last week, projections could easily underestimate the amount of business Barbenheimer will do again this weekend so don’t be shocked if it overperforms again.
