Barbenheimer Defeats “Demeter” At Box-Office

Universal Pictures

The period horror tale “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” has sunk in its debut at the domestic box office, marking the second Dracula film this year to hit audience indifference.

The long-in-the-works film pulled in just $2.62 million on its opening day, a number that includes $750,000 in Thursday previews. As such, it’s on track to open in fifth place with just $6.5 million for its opening weekend.

The $45 million-budgeted film wasn’t helped by reviews scores with poor reviews on critics aggregate sites and a B- CinemaScore from audiences.

The Barbenheimer phenomenon was back in the top two spots. “Barbie” is looking to pull in $31.4 million in its fourth weekend of release – down just 41%. The film crossed the $500 million mark domestically on Friday and will soon surpass “The Dark Knight” at $534 million to become the top-grossing Warner Bros. film ever at the domestic box-office.

“Oppenheimer” added a further $5.1 million on Friday with a projected $17.2 million for the weekend – down 41% from its previous outing/. Domestically it now stands at $262 million.

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” took $4 million on Friday and is headed for a $14.6 million three-day weekend in third place. “Meg 2: The Trench” will take a bite at fourth with $11.8 million in its second weekend – down 60% from its $30 million opening.
