The winners of this year’s Venice Film Festival have been announced, with the awards handed out setting the early stages for the coming awards race at the end of the year.
This year the top prize of the Golden Lion went to Laura Poitras’ “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” – a portrait of the photographer and activist Nan Goldin who took on Purdue Pharma. The film has already been acquired by Neon for U.S. theatrical release.
“The Banshees of Inisherin” took Best Actor for Colin Farrell and Best Screenplay for Martin McDonagh. Luca Guadagnino’s “Bones and All” nabbed the Silver Lion for Best Director and the Best Young Actor award for Taylor Russell.
Cate Blanchett won Best Actress for “Tár” while Alice Diop’s “Saint Omer” took the Grand Jury Prize and a Best Debut Feature prize. Jafar Panah’s “No Bears” won a special jury prize, while Houman Seyyedi’s “World War III” snagged best film in the Horizons section.
