In between his two Bond entries with “Goldeneye” and “Casino Royale,” filmmaker Martin Campbell also crafted another studio blockbuster of high quality – 1998’s “The Mask of Zorro”.
Released to a $250 million worldwide box-office and very good reviews, the film saw Antonio Banderas take on the mantle from an elder Zorro (Anthony Hopkins), who spends the movie teaching him and passing on his knowledge and training.
Recently Banderas spoke about the character again with ComicBook.com and revealed that he’d do another Zorro if he could essentially take on the Hopkins role of the mentor passing the torch to a new generation:
“Yes, I would. I would consider that possibility. Why not? Yeah, I think today, I said something like that to somebody. They asked me about Zorro. If they called me to do Zorro, I would do what Anthony Hopkins did for me, which is to pass the torch.”
Banderas also acknowledged his “Uncharted” co-star Tom Holland as a good possibility when asked about a potential successor: “I did Uncharted with him, and he’s so energetic and fun, and he’s got this spark too… Why not?”.
Various different takes on Zorro are in development at this time, including a telenovela-style period Disney series starring Wilmer Valderrama.
