A British research firm, Ampere Analysis, has revealed a list of four video game IPs they believe are ripe for film and TV adaptations based on multiple factors.
Game-to-screen adaptations have soared in recent years with films like “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “A Minecraft Movie,” “Uncharted,” “Sonic the Hedgehog” and “Five Nights at Freddy’s” along with TV series like “The Last of Us,” “Fallout,” “Twisted Metal,” and “Halo”.
Plenty more are on the way with new “Mario,” “Sonic,” “The Legend of Zelda,” “Mortal Kombat” and “Street Fighter” films and shows based on the likes of “God of War,” “Mass Effect,” “Assassin’s Creed,” “Tomb Raider,” “Ghost of Tsushima,” “BioShock,” “Sleeping Dogs,” “Death Stranding” and “Gears of War”.
But not all the major IPs are taken just yet. Ampere says that recent games like “Baldur’s Gate III,” “Black Myth: Wukong,” “Hollow Knight: Silksong,” and “Sons of the Forest” are the ones that would make for the best screen adaptations that haven’t already been acquired.
They cited games having eight key characteristics to make for a good adaptation, some of those qualities being a “defined narrative, adaptation style, franchise popularity and addressable audience”.
The analysis noted that each of these four titles has “strong popularity,” is a “recent release,” and contains “distinctive worlds”. They also say commissions of gaming IP have increased by an average 30% since 2019, while adaptations of the properties in general are moving more towards live-action rather than animated.
