The “Sonic” sequel and the newly arrived “Bad Guys” are dominating the U.S. box-office, whilst the “Harry Potter” spin-off series is getting the overseas support it wanted.
DreamWorks Animation and Universal’s “The Bad Guys” easily won the domestic weekend with an estimated $24 million whilst overseas it has earned $63 million to date. Combining good reviews and a great A CinemaScore, the movie is expected to have legs and do well.
In its third weekend, “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” came in second with an estimated $15.2 million domestically, bringing its North American box-office total to $145.8 million. Combined with an overseas that’s about on par, the film now has a worldwide haul of $287.8 million and isn’t slowing down just yet.
“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” fell to third in the U.S., a sharp drop of 67% to gross $14 million in its second weekend. Thanks to early openings overseas, its global haul is strong and worldwide to date it now stands at $280 million.
“The Northman” opened in fourth place, coming in on the higher end of expectations with $12 million – but its costly $70-90 million budget, and a not so great B CinemaScore, make its prospects of a long life unlikely.
The Nic Cage film “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” came in fifth opened to $7.2 million and also not the best B+ CinemaScore – performing in line with modest expectations.
“The Lost City” is also hitting overseas markets where it’s doing pretty good, earning $42.7 million outside the U.S. to date and bringing its global total to $128 million.
