Bad Bunny’s Spider-Man Spin-Off Stalls

Sony Pictures

Last year came the news that Puerto Rican rapper and “Bullet Train” actor Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, aka. Bad Bunny, would lead the “Spider-Man” spin-off film “El Muerto” at Sony Pictures.

Gareth Dunnet Alcocer (“Blue Beetle”) was writing the script about a luchador (Latino wrestler) with superpowers passed down from generation to generation in a single family.

It marks the first Latino character to lead a live-action Marvel film which will be part of Sony’s SPUMC universe alongside the likes of “Venom” and “Morbius” rather than the MCU. Back in October, Jonas Cuaron became attached to direct.

This week, the Grammy-winning rapper landed a Time cover story and was asked about El Muerto. According to the outlet, the star reportedly “feigned confusion” and confirmed that filming has yet to take place. His publicist later told the outlet the movie is in development but is “at a standstill”.

In the comics, Juan Carlos Estrada Sanchez is a superpowered wrestler who goes by the name of El Muerto. He inherited his powers from his father, who sacrificed his life to save Juan Carlos from their family’s long-time nemesis El Dorado.

Bad Bunny is a familiar face to wrestling fans. He won the WWE 24/7 championship and competed in several events, including WrestleMania 37 and two Royal Rumble appearances.

There have been no updates about the project since its announcement, and if no work has begun then its current January 12th 2024 release date is highly likely to be delayed.
