As part of a new Esquire profile piece published this past week, actor Kevin Bacon says he has zero interest in doing sequels to any of his earlier films. There is one notable exception though – 1990’s “Tremors”.
The creature feature remains a cult classic, loved for its colorful characters, monster worm mayhem and comedy along with great chemistry between Bacon and co-star Fred Ward. The numerous, mostly direct-to-video sequels though were not well regarded and Bacon wasn’t involved (Ward only appearing in one).
Universal approached Bacon several years ago about making more of the films direct-to-video, he declined. Five years ago, Bacon himself tried to ignite interest – approaching Blumhouse about a reboot or revival:
“We were around the 25-year anniversary. I went to Blumhouse, and they were totally into the idea. Universal didn’t want to remake it as a feature and also maybe because it didn’t work as a feature the first time. So we put it aside. Then they came back to me and said, ‘What would you think about doing it as a series?'”
The series was shopped around, eventually landing at SyFy but didn’t make it to air. Cut to today and Bacon says he’s still very much up for another go as he says it’s the only film of his he has ever rewatched since its premiere:
“It was one film of mine that I wanted to revisit that character. I don’t look back at all… I would still love to do it, believe me. Maybe it needs to be the 30th anniversary or the 35th. We’ll keep going.”
“Tremors” was released on 4K UHD disc earlier this year.
