“Backrooms” Heading For Big Box-Office

A24

New tracking figures for A24’s upcoming film adaptation of the “Backrooms” viral videos suggest it will do considerably better than previously projected.

Two weeks ago, early estimates suggested the film will open at a “minimum of $20 million” for its domestic opening weekend.

EmpireCity Box Office, one of the most reliable of box-office trackers, has delivered a very different prediction. They indicate the film will open with at least $35 million and could very well hit $50 million, possibly more.

In fact, it’s indicated that pre-sales of the film are currently matching that of “Scream 7” – a movie that opened to around $64 million earlier this year.

Either way, it seems the film is certain to break the $25.7 million opening weekend record for A24, which was set by Alex Garland’s “Civil War”. Not bad for a film said to be budgeted at just $8 million.

Reviews for the film are expected out early next week. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell, and Avan Jogia star in the film, which was helmed by 20-year-old Kane Parsons.

“Backrooms” opens in cinemas on May 29th.
