Filmmaker Tony Ayres (“Cut Snake,” “The Slap”) and his production company are developing “The Fires,” a six-part serialised anthology series about the experiences of those affected by the Australian megafires across late 2019/early 2020.
Andrea Denholm (“Wrong Kind of Black”) and Liz Watts (“True History of the Kelly Gang”) will also produce while Emmy Award-winning writer Belinda Chayko (“Stateless”) leads a writing them that includes Jacquelin Perske (“The Cry”), Mirrah Foulkes (“Judy and Punch”), Steven McGregor (“Mystery Road”) and Anya Beyersdorf.
Each episode is based around character studies of ordinary people caught in the unimaginable, and the impossible choices they were forced to make.
The series captures the scale of the disaster by following the path of the fires from September through February as the disaster grew and consumed lives, homes, communities and more than a billion native animals.
