Armando Iannucci’s space comedy Avenue 5 has been officially cancelled by HBO.
The axing comes nine months after reports first emerged suggesting the series would end with the show’s second season which hadn’t aired at that time.
A spokesperson for the cabler says: “Going to space with Armando Iannucci has been an incredible journey. While we will not be moving forward with a third season of Avenue 5, we look forward to many more adventures together.”
The comedy follows the crew of a luxury space cruise ship as they navigate disgruntled passengers and logistical obstacles in an effort to safely return to Earth after the accidental death of the Chief Engineer.
The second season, which the pandemic delayed the start of production on, didn’t get to air until October last year – two and a half years after its first season.
Cast options had lapsed as a result of the delays, and then Hugh Laurie’s joining the cast of the third season of “Tehran” this week pretty much confirmed “Avenue 5” was over.
Josh Gad, Zach Woods, Rebecca Front, Suzy Nakamura, Lenora Crichlow, Nikki Amuka-Bird and Ethan Phillips co-starred in the series.
HBO and Iannucci are staying in business together as he is set to team up with Sam Mendes on the superhero movie-making satire “The Franchise” which will film a pilot this Spring.
