It has taken at least five years, but the first of the “Avatar” sequels is now complete.
Producer Jon Landau, who also produced the original 2009 film, took to Instagram today to announce the end of the film’s lengthy post-production process that began in 2020.
Landau posted a shot of himself, director James Cameron and the film’s massive post-production team smiling and celebrating “Avatar: The Way of Water,” which “completed our final mix and picture mastering” on Wednesday.
Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has already seen a likely earlier version of the film and tweeted about it, saying it’s “a staggering achievement… chock-full of majestic Vistas and emotions at an epic, epic scale. A master at the peak of his powers.”
The completion comes just three weeks out from the film’s release on or around December 16th in cinemas worldwide – including China, where it’s one of the few Hollywood films getting into that market this year.
Tickets can be pre-ordered now, with the film on track for a domestic opening weekend of $150-175 million.
