“Avatar” Sequel Overtakes “Avengers: Infinity War”

20th Century Studios

Including Wednesday’s worldwide box office grosses, James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” has now surpassed $2.0547 billion globally.

As a result, the sci-fi epic has passed “Avengers: Infinity War” at $2.052 billion to become the fifth highest-grossing movie ever made worldwide and the fourth highest-grossing release internationally (with $1.4513 billion outside North America).

The film is now on track to overtake the $2.068 billion of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in the coming days to give James Cameron three of the top four highest-grossing titles worldwide.

Whether it can overtake “Titanic” is another matter. The film is around $135 million away from the worldwide gross of Cameron’s ship epic at $2.195 billion. That number will shortly go higher with the planned Valentine’s Day re-release.
