“Avatar” Returning To Chinese Cinemas

China’s Film Bureau has reportedly approved plans for James Cameron’s 2009 sci-fi epic “Avatar” to get a wide re-release in the country this coming Friday.

An official public announcement is said to be imminent. The blockbuster will reportedly be made available to exhibitors for a nationwide release in both IMAX 3D and ordinary 3D.

One thing the abrupt rollout could do is restore the film’s crown as the highest-grossing movie in global box-office history. “Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame” currently holds that title at $2.797 billion to “Avatar” at $2.790 billion.

The film needs to earn just under $7.4 million to reclaim the crown and the film was among a shortlist of historically popular blockbuster titles China’s Film Bureau requested for re-release last year. The deal was completed but the film wasn’t put to use – until now.
