“Avatar” Overtakes “Maverick” At Box-Office

20th Century Studios

Slow and steady wins the race indeed.

James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” has exceeded $1.5 billion mark as of the end of Wednesday with $1,516.5 million in worldwide ticket sales.

As a result, and after just 22 days of release, the film has overtaken the entire several months gross of “Top Gun: Maverick” ($1,489 million) to become the No. 1 worldwide release of 2022.

In addition, it is also now become the tenth highest-grossing film of all time globally, surpassing “Furious 7”. By the end of today, it’s expected to pass “The Avengers” and take the No. 9 spot. Overseas alone, the film has already surpassed the $1 billion mark.

Midweek numbers continue to hold well for the feature, which has no real competition beyond smaller and more niche titles like “M3GAN” until March. Thus there is plenty of time for it to keep raking in the dough even as its momentum is finally beginning to slow down.

Updated final projections for the film see its final worldwide gross coming in anywhere between the $2.2-2.8 billion mark. Domestically it currently sits at $464.9 million, but with the holds it’s experiencing, it could well surpass the $650 million mark.

Even if it hits on the lower end of projections, it will easily pass the $2 billion mark that Cameron has previously touted as the movie’s break-even point and looks very much on track to become the third highest-grossing film of all time – besting Cameron’s own “Titanic” and coming in not that far behind its predecessor.
