Australian “Zelda” Commercial Draws Acclaim

Nintendo

Nintendo’s Australian division has quickly been on the receiving end of some high praise following their commercial for this week’s release of “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom”.

The TV spot is themed around the line ‘Rediscover Your Sense of Adventure’ and follows a man commuting home from corporate drudgery. As his wife goes to bed, he opts to pick up a copy of the game and begins to play.

After some fails, he manages to build a raft and then keeps on playing as he commutes back to work the next day, looking out the window at the sky which is a brighter blue, this time like in the game.

The commercial has drawn acclaim for showing a side of gaming rarely marketed to – those in stressful or demanding jobs seeking escapism and entertainment. Within a day, the video has racked up 1.1 million views on Nintendo Australia’s YouTube channel and millions more on social media.

Kotaku spoke with a source who worked on the commercial and says it was inspired by “a Japanese Amazon review for Breath of the Wild”. The actor in the ad is Gareth Reeves, who played Harry Potter in the Australian stage production of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”.

“The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” will be released on May 12th on Nintendo Switch.
