“Asterix” Writer Albert Uderzo Dies

French comic book artist and scriptwriter Albert Uderzo has died at the age of 92. He reportedly died in his sleep at his home in Neuilly from a heart attack unrelated to the coronavirus.

Rene Goscinny and Uderzo created “Asterix” which, along with Herge’s “Tintin,” had a massive cult following around the globe except for the United States (where they were niche properties). The books were nearly ubiquitous in European and Australian households, and the several dozen “Asterix” books have sold over 380 million copies.

Goscinny died in 1977, Uderzo then took over the writing until 2009. The comic has yielded multiple films both in animated and live-action form along with a theme park.
