Filmmaker Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale,” starring Brendan Fraser and Sadie Sink, has been granted a December 9th U.S. theatrical release date by distributor A24.

The project, an adaptation of Samuel D. Hunter’s 2012 play, sees Fraser slap on a whole bunch of prosthetics to play a 600-pound (272 kg) middle-age recluse who tries to reconnect with his estranged 17-year-old daughter.

Fraser is slated to be the recipient of this year’s Tribute Award for Performance at the Toronto Film Festival – an award that both Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”) and Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”) won in recent years before going on to win Oscars for their same performances.

The announcement comes ahead of the film’s premiere on September 4th at the Venice Film Festival.
