“Black Swan” and “The Whale” filmmaker Darren Aronofsky’s small debut feature “Pi” is heading to the biggest cinemas of all – IMAX.
As part of his original deal, the film’s rights have been returned to Aronofsky who has now sold them to A24 who will oversee the re-release timed for the film’s 25th anniversary.
A special screening will happen on 3/14 in Los Angeles, boasting a live Q&A with Aronofsky, cinematographer Matthew Libatique, composer Clint Mansell, actor Sean Gullette and other special guests. Following that, the plan is to release the film in theaters and on digital platforms later this year.
Gullette stars in the film as a mathematician who becomes obsessed with looking for patterns in the universe as part of his quest to find meaning.
Aronofsky says in a statement: “We went back to the original black and white reversal 16mm film and scanned it at 8K. We also turned our original stereo mix into an Atmos experience. Everyone thought we were a little crazy but the film has never looked or sounded better.”
The movie premiered at Sundance in 1998 to acclaim and a Director’s Award before going on win the Independent Spirit Award for Best Screenplay.
The re-release has been formatted through IMAX’s proprietary digital remastering process (DMR) and remastered for IMAX sound. It is being presented in 8K and Dolby Atmos.
