Will Arnett (“30 Rock,” “Blades of Glory,” “Arrested Development”) is replacing Armie Hammer in Taika Waititi’s already shot sports comedy “Next Goal Wins” at Searchlight Pictures.
The film follows Dutch-American football coach Thomas Rongen (Michael Fassbender) who is tasked with turning the American Samoa national team, considered one of the weakest football teams in the world, into an elite squad.
Elisabeth Moss, Frankie Adams, Beulah Koale, Rhys Darby, and Angus Sampson co-star in the film which was shot late 2019 in Hawaii. Hammer had a cameo as an executive at the Football Federation American Samoa, with Arnett replacing him in the role during reshoots. With Arnett’s hiring, the role was reportedly expanded on a little.
Hammer was accused by multiple women of sexual assault, claims he denied, with the LAPD subsequently launching an investigation throughout much of this year. In the wake of the scandal, Hammer exited several films and series including “Shotgun Wedding,” “Gaslit” and “The Offer”.
“Next Goal Wins” was one of two already shot films that had Hammer involved which made releasing them difficult. The other, “Death on the Nile,” can’t reshoot or cut out his scenes and so is being released in February by 20th Century Studios.
