Aragorn To Be Recast In “Hunt for Gollum”

New Line Cinema

The upcoming Andy Serkis-directed “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt For Gollum” is expected to see multiple actors from the original “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy reprising their roles.

As previously reported, the film is set just prior to the events of “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” as Aragorn, Gandalf, and Sauron are all looking for Gollum and the story will unfold from Gollum’s perspective.

It was previously confirmed that characters like Frodo and Gandalf all appear in the movie, with Aragorn expected to be a major role as he is tasked by Gandalf to find Gollum before the creature can share any sensitive information about the One Ring with anyone and have it get back to Sauron.

Actor Viggo Mortensen is notably older than he was during his time as Aragorn, but the previous plan was to potentially use de-aging tech and get the actor back for the role.

Now, Knight Edge Media is reporting that the production has instead opted to go for a younger actor in the role. The outlet claims several actors have already met with director Serkis about playing Aragorn, but their names are currently unknown.

The ‘Rings’ trilogies have recast major actors before, most notably the character of Bilbo Baggins with Martin Freeman replacing Ian Holm in the role in “The Hobbit” trilogy.

Serkis directs the film, with Peter Jackson returning to produce alongside Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, the original trio behind the “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogies.
