“Aquaman” Scribe Updates Sequel & “Trench”

“Aquaman” writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick recently held an unexpected Q&A session on social media as a welcome distraction during the COVID-19 pandemic.

First up, he discussed the planned spinoff revolving around The Trench, the monstrous beings that make up one of the Atlantean kingdoms and appeared in a key sequence in the first film which starred Jason Momoa as the DC Comics hero.

The plan remains for it to be set between the events of the first and second film but “pieces of this is still being worked out” and it sounds like not much progress has happened since it was first announced.

Meanwhile a direct “Aquaman” sequel is on the way and due in 2022. Asked if there’s any one storyline the movie will be based on, he responded:

“We’re not taking any one particular comic book story and adapting it, but if you want to know the vibe we’re going for, pick up pretty much any Silver Age story featuring Black Manta. It [the script] is going good! I’m texting with [James Wan] about the draft of the script right now — I think you’re gonna dig it.”

“Watchmen” actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will return as Black Manta in the new film alongside numerous other returning actors.
