Warner Bros. Pictures held its CinemaCon presentation today and – along with its “The Flash,” “Dune: Part Two” and “Meg 2: The Trench” trailer presentations we’ve already reported on – they showed off a bunch of other stuff too.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom
Along with “The Flash,” Warners also shared a look at James Wan’s “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” which offers some new plot details. The trailer reportedly showed glimpses of Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman and Temuera Morrison, who all return.
In the film Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II ) is using a powerful artifact known as The Black Trident that gives him powers that threaten the surface world. As a result, Aquaman, who has a baby boy now, needs to team up with his brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) to stop him.
“Blue Beetle” also got a look in with an extended trailer. Xolo Maridueña described his character as the only superhero who doesn’t seem to want his powers.
Barbie
Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling took to the stage in pink and white outfits to promote Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” alongside Gerwig and co-star America Ferrera. Several minutes of never-before-seen scenes were shown off, revealing some of the plot.
In the film, strange things start happening to Barbie, like cold showers and burnt waffles and then the worst kind of ailment – flat feet. Her fellow Barbies suggest she go and see weird Barbie (Kate McKinnon), who offers her a choice of regular Barbie life or real life. Gosling talked about his role as Ken, saying:
“I had up until this point, I only knew Ken from afar. I didn’t know Ken from within. If I’m being really honest, I doubted my Ken-ergy. I didn’t see it. Margot and Greta, I feel like they conjured this out of me somewhere. One day, I was bleaching my hair and shaving my legs and wearing bespoke neon outfits and rollerblading down Venice Beach. It came on like a fever, like a Scarlet fever. Why is there fake tanner on my sheets? Why am I wearing jackets without shirts? What just happened.”
Wonka
The Timothee Chalamet-led “Wonka” musical scored its first trailer and revealed that Hugh Grant plays an Oompa-Loompa in the film – re-teaming with his “Paddington 2” director Paul King on the project. The trailer indicates the film will see a young Willy Wonka facing off against a chocolate cartel that wants to prevent him from practising his craft. Chalamet describes his character as “a Willy that’s full of joy and optimism” and unlike the cynical Wonka seen in the Gene Wilder movie.
The Conjuring: Last Rites
The fourth instalment in “The Conjuring” franchise has officially been titled “The Conjuring: Last Rites”, with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick returning to pen the screenplay. No director is yet set, but James Wan and Peter Safran will produce, and Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are reprising their roles as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.
The Nun 2
Set four years after the ending of the first film, Taissa Farmiga’s Sister Irene squares off against the demon Valak in the Michael Chaves-directed film penned by “M3GAN” scribe Akela Cooper. A trailer showed a group of girls playing a sinister game called ‘Defy the Devil’ in a chapel in France that goes wrong. The rest of the clip shows a bunch of religious horror imagery, and the makers confirmed they filmed in an actual abandoned church in France.
The Color Purple
Producer Oprah Winfrey introduced the first trailer for “The Color Purple,” the film adaptation of the musical based on Alice Walker’s book. Fantasia Taylor and Danielle Brooks reprise their stage roles for the film which also stars Colman Domingo, Taraji P. Henson, Jon Baptiste, H.E.R, Deon Cole, Ciara, Halle Bailey and Corey Hawkins.
Finally, the studio screened a promo reel for its 100th anniversary, which reportedly included the very first shots from George Miller’s “Furiosa”.
