The original “The Bourne Identity” trilogy is still held up as a benchmark of quality modern action cinema, even as the last two entries – the Jeremy Renner-led “The Bourne Legacy” and the Damon returns vehicle “Jason Bourne” – proved a disappointment.
Three years on, the franchise is alive again with the USA Network spin-off series “Treadstone” which follows a number of sleeper agents after the supposed shuttering of the Bourne-creating Treadstone project years prior.
The aim of the series is to expand the world-building of the franchise, much like ‘Legacy’ did, and now executive producer Ben Smith tells Cinema Blend this week the show will also have big connections with a new film in the franchise – though he couldn’t offer specific details:
“I mean we are definitely working on another film. What we’re doing within that? Will there be connected tissue in terms of are we all existing within the same world and universe? Absolutely. The details of that are still under wraps.”
This marks the first real hint that another Bourne film is actually in the works. “Treadstone” premieres on the USA Network on Tuesday, October 15th.
