Anna Faris is abruptly exiting the CBS comedy series “Mom” after seven seasons serving as the co-lead opposite Allison Janney.
THR broke the story, indicating Faris’ departure is not due to COVID-19 concerns but rather a desire to pursue other opportunities. Her role won’t be recast but her absence will be addressed in the show.
Faris says in a statement: “The past seven years on Mom have been some of the most fulfilling and rewarding of my career. I’m so thankful to Chuck, the writers, and my amazing castmates for creating a truly wonderful work experience. While my journey as Christy has come to an end, allowing me to pursue new opportunities, I’ll be watching next season and rooting for my TV family.”
While Faris & Janney dominated the storylines of early seasons, more recent years has seen it become an ensemble as supporting cast members like Mimi Kennedy, Jaime Pressly, Beth Hall, William Fichtner and Kirsten Johnston have seen their roles grow. All are set to return.
It’s not clear when Faris informed producers of her decision, but the writers apparently weren’t delayed as a result and so the eighth season is going ahead as planned with production commencing in just under two weeks. No premiere date is yet set.
