“Moonlight,” “Castle Rock” and “The Knick” star Andre Holland is in talks to play Black Panther leader Huey P. Newton in the six-episode limited series “The Big Cigar” for the Apple TV+ service and Warner Bros. Television.
The series is based on a Playboy magazine article that detailed how Newton turned to his best friend, “Easy Rider” producer Bert Schneider, and eluded a nationwide manhunt to flee to Cuba as he was pursued into exile by the FBI.
Jim Hecht, co-creator of HBO’s “Winning Time”, will pen the script and executive produce the series while Janine Sherman Barrios (“Claws”) will serve as showrunner.
Hecht, Sherman Barrios, Joshuah Bearman, Joshua Davis and Arthur Spector executive produce while Don Cheadle is set to direct the first two episodes.
