French filmmaker Justine Triet has become only the third woman to win the top prize of the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival – joining Jane Campion for “The Piano” and Julia Ducournau for “Titane”.
Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” unfolds in a remote town in the French Alps where German writer Sandra (Sandra HĂ¼ller) lives with her French husband Samuel and their eleven-year-old son Daniel.
When Samuel is found dead in snow below their chalet, the police consider it suspicious and presume murder, with Sandra becoming the main suspect.
Neon has already acquired the title for U.S. distribution, the fourth Palme d’Or winner in a row it has acquired following their success with 2021’s “Triangle of Sadness,” 2020’s “Titane” and 2019’s “Parasite”.
Other winners included “Under the Skin” director Jonathan Glazer’s long-awaited return with “The Zone of Interest” which took the runner-up Grand Prize (A24 will release it in the U.s.), and Aki Kaurismaki’s “Fallen Leaves,” which scored a Jury Prize.
On the individual fronts, Tran Anh Hung (“The Pot-au-Feu”) snagged best director, Yuji Sakamato (“Monster”) took best screenplay, Koji Yakusho (“Perfect Days”) and Merve Dizdar (“About Dry Grasses”) took acting honors, and “Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell” won the Camera d’Or.
Quentin Tarantino also appeared on stage to introduce a tribute to 97-year-old filmmaking legend Roger Corman who received a standing ovation.
