Analysts: Moviegoing To Drop 11% Post-COVID

A new poll by L.A.-based E-Poll Market Research has indicated that cinemagoing attendance will likely drop by around 11% once the current pandemic crisis is over and life returns mostly to normal.

The poll of 1,677 U.S. consumers 13 and older asked about the activities that Americans plan to continue after ‘things return to normal’, asking if people would be inclined to do something more or less, and then subtracting the difference between the two scores to come up with a net figure.

According to the survey, 12% say they would increase cinemagoing after this while 23% said they would do less of it – yielding a net result of -11%. Moviegoing came in fifth last behind concerts (-12%), sporting events (-13%), theme parks (-13%) and cruise ships (-18%).

On the flipside, watching and streaming movies and TV at home will increase with 21% saying they’ll do more and 14% saying they’ll do less – resulting in a net result of +7%. The only things higher were exercising outdoors and in at-home gyms (+20%) and cooking (+17%).

Streaming video viewing on TVs in the U.S. hit 654.6 billion minutes from March 23-April 19th according to Nielsen, more than double the 301.4 billion minutes streamed in the comparable four-week period in 2019. Of that, Netflix had the biggest share with 32% followed by YouTube with 20%.
