Analysis: Comic-Con At Home Was A Bust

An attempt to bring Comic-Con out of San Diego and online proved rather disastrous going by social media reaction.

A new report in Variety indicates social engagement for the virtual fan convention was down 94% from last year’s live event and average views on YouTube for Thursday’s panels came in at around a poor 15,000.

The data hails from social media analytics firm ListenFirst which indicates only 93,681 tweets involved the convention, down from the 1,719,000 tweets about San Diego Comic-Con in 2019. TV panels were down 93%, and film panels were down a massive 99%.

Part of the downside was the lack of any exciting participating panels with the “New Mutants” panel scoring the best even if it only just snagged 208,000 views. CBS’ “Star Trek”, AMC’s “The Walking Dead” and the two Keanu Reeves-led film panels were the biggest performers.

It’s not clear if any such attempt will be made again next year should large gatherings like the convention still be unable to take place.
