Paramount Pictures has announced that it’s working on “Tracy Flick Can’t Win,” a sequel to Alexander Payne’s cult classic 1999 comedy “Election” for the Paramount+ service.
Payne is returning as director, with Reese Witherspoon to produce and reprise her starring role.
Based on Tom Perrotta’s 1998 novel of the same name, the celebrated dark satire “Election” saw high school teacher Jim McAllister (Matthew Broderick) on a collision course with over-achieving student politician Tracy Flick (Witherspoon).
The follow-up is based on Perrotta’s recently published novel in which a now adult Tracy is still struggling to fight her way to the top.
Payne is once again adapting the screenplay with Jim Taylor while Witherspoon, Lauren Neustadter, Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa will produce.
Perrotta remains an author in high demand for screen adaptations with HBO’s “The Leftovers,” and “Mrs. Fletcher,” and the film “Little Children,” all based on his books.
