Amenabar, AMC Plan Sunken Treasure Series

AMC Studios and Spanish SVOD service Movistar Plus are partnering on the production and distribution of a six-part thriller series about sunken treasure and hailing from Oscar-winning “The Others” and “The Sea Inside” director Alejandro Amenabar in his first TV project.

Inspired by the Spanish graphic novel “The Treasure of the Black Swan,” the currently untitled series will premiere in 2021 on AMC in North America and Movistar Plus in Spain. The project, one of the most ambitious and expensive shows ever made out of Spain, will boast an international cast and unfolds on both sides of the Atlantic both in contemporary times and with flashbacks to 1804.

The story follows Alex Ventura, a young and inexperienced Spanish diplomat, who by chance ends up leading a mission to recuperate a fabulous sunken treasure trove discovered by adventurer Frank Wild. Teaming with combative public official Lucia and American lawyer Jonas Pierce, Ventura sets out on the adventure of a lifetime, discovering the importance of love, friendship and commitment to one’s beliefs.

The comic was inspired by a real life legal battle when a Florida-based treasure hunting company found $500 million worth of silver coins in a sunken wreck at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean – a wreck the Spanish government claimed belonged to them. So began a fight over the largest recovered sunken treasure in history.

Amenabar, who is co-writing with Antonio Hernandez, will direct all six episodes of the series which is scheduled to go into production this summer.
