AMC & Universal Cold War Is Thawing

The Cold War between AMC Theaters and Universal Pictures may be thawing out a bit.

AMC announced its Q1 earnings yesterday and with the release included a statement saying “while we are in active dialogue with Universal, no movies made by Universal Studios are currently on our docket.”

That at least indicates discussions are going on, a far cry from just over a month ago when AMC CEO and President Adam Aron publicly sent a note to Universal saying they were barring all the studio’s future titles following the success of “Trolls World Tour” on PVOD.

Speaking with analysts, Aron said: “So, look, relations are warm with Universal. They have always been warm, and I’m using that as a good word. There’s nothing personal about this issue with Universal. I have great respect for Universal’s executives. It’s just an issue about money. We are in active dialogue with Universal.”

Things need to be settled before the late Fall as Universal is handling the overseas distribution of the new James Bond film “No Time To Die” which will open stateside on November 25th. Universal isn’t slated to start releasing films in cinemas until “Let Him Go” on August 21st.

As for AMC itself, the company reportedly suffered a net loss of $2.4 billion over the first quarter of this year. The news came as AMC vowed they intend to be “fully open globally in July”.
