AMC Reverses “Soulmates” Renewal Order

AMC

AMC has reversed a renewal order for the previously announced second season of the sci-fi anthology series “Soulmates”.

Set approximately 15 years in the future, the story follows a company called Soul Connex who has developed a test that can determine the person you were most meant to love with 100% accuracy.

People who take the test either learn of their soulmate and have the choice to pursue that person, or get a response of, “Your soulmate hasn’t tested yet.” In self-contained episodes, the story explores whether love is destiny or a choice.

Produced in-house at AMC Studios, the original series starred Sarah Snook, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Bill Skarsgard, Malin Akerman, Charlie Heaton and Betsy Brandt.

The project, which hailed from Will Bridges (“Black Mirror”) and Emmy winner Brett Goldstein (“Ted Lasso,” “Shrinking”), was initially renewed back in August 2020 – two months before its premiere.

Then “Ted Lasso” became a breakout hit for Apple, and the first season of “Soulmates” was rather disastrous in the ratings – averaging less than 200,000 viewers during its linear run on AMC.

The decision to cancel the show was reportedly made quietly last year as other factors, including Goldstein’s busy schedule, came into play.

It joins multiple other projects at AMC like “Damascus,” “Moonhaven,” and “61st Street” which had either second-season orders, or were in the midst of production of sophomore runs, when the network opted to scrap them and take advantage of tax write-offs.
