AMC & Netflix Reach Truce Thanks To “KPop”

Netflix

Many have tried, but ultimately something of a truce between two of Hollywood’s biggest enemies has been reached – and it’s all thanks to a demon-fighting Korean pop group.

The sing along version of Netflix’s “Kpop Demon Hunters” returns to cinemas from October 31st-November 2nd, the title previously released for one weekend only on August 22nd-25th where it pulled in $19 million and topped the box-office chart.

What is notably different this time however is that the biggest U.S. exhibitor, AMC Theatres, will be carrying the title this time after sitting out the August release. The title will play in 400 AMC theaters around the globe in addition to Regal and Cinemark cinemas.

For a very long time, Netflix and AMC have often been at odds over windowing to the point that the pair have effectively been ‘enemies’ with AMC refusing to carry Netflix film releases. There has been the odd exception though, such as “Glass Onion” in 2022.

In a statement about today’s news, an AMC Theatres spokesperson says only: “Netflix, the world’s largest streaming service, and AMC Entertainment, the world’s largest theatre chain, have jointly decided to work together. ”

In addition, Deadline reports that discussions are underway about “mutually beneficial opportunities that could arise from this and future collaborations”. What those entail are unclear.

So far the arrangement only appears to be for this title, and no other Netflix films on the way including “Frankenstein,” “A House of Dynamite” and “Wake Up Dead Man”.
