Amblin TV has announced they are currently developing a small-screen adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s iconic Japanese 1950 feature “Rashomon”.
Co-written by Kurosawa and Shinobu Hasimoto, the story revolves around the rape of a bride and the murder of her samurai husband. It was famed because it unfolds from four different perspectives – a bandit, the bride, a woodcutter and the ghost of the samurai – with each seeing the incident differently.
The film received rave reviews from critics worldwide except for those from its country of origin and is widely considered as the first to put Japanese filmmaking onto the world stage. It still consistently appears on numerous lists for the best films of all time.
Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey, Mark Canton, David Hopwood and Leigh Ann Burton will executive produce and adapt the story into a ten-part mystery drama series surrounding a single event. What that event is has yet to be announced but it will tell the story from each of the different characters’ perspectives.
