Amazon Wins Hemsworth-Pascal Led “Crime”

Netflix, HBO

Amazon has reportedly beat out Netflix in a bidding war to the right for an adaptation of Don Winslow novella “Crime 101” according to Puck News (via The Playlist).

The outlet indicates Amazon won with thanks to a $90 million deal and the promise of a theatrical release for the film, whereas Netflix reportedly wanted script revisions.

News of the project first emerged earlier this week with the thriller film package having actors Chris Hemsworth and Pedro Pascal reportedly attached along with “American Animals” director Bart Layton.

The story is based on a 2021 novella by novelist Don Winslow and follows a middle-aged, recently divorced detective named Lou Lubesnick investigating a long-unsolved series of high-level jewel thefts along the U.S. Pacific coast.

Hemsworth and Pascal were attached to the project since before the strike started, and the deal is entirely for rights which is why it doesn’t fall under union strike rules.

The film being set up at Amazon marks a bit of a change for Hemsworth who has been something of a brand ambassador for Netflix with his “Extraction” films. That said, the outlet indicates Hemsworth may ultimately end up not doing the movie at all.
