Amazon Prime is reportedly exploring the possibility of more global franchises in the wake of producing the Russo Brothers’ upcoming big-budget spy action thriller series “Citadel”.
Richard Madden, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Stanley Tucci and Lesley Manville lead the cast of the six-episode series which follows spies from all over the globe who come together to work for Citadel – a spy organization that has no allegiance to any country.
Eight years later, the group has been destroyed by a shadowy organization called Manticore. Madden and Chopra Jonas play agents who are reunited and must attempt to piece together what happened and who they really are.
Complicating matters is that their memories have been wiped and they have been living normal lives for years, unaware they’re actually elite spies. Tucci plays their former Citadel colleague who recruits the pair for a mission to stop Manticore, while Manville plays the villain of the piece – a determined woman working for dark forces.
The show is generating local language satellite series spinoffs in markets like India, Italy and Mexico that will see local stars in key roles. The Italian one has already been shot with the Indian one currently filming.
Amazon’s streaming VP James Farrell appeared at Series Mania this week and told the audience that should the series be a success it is “highly likely” his non-U.S. team will seek more scripted and unscripted projects that allow for a similar approach of a main U.S. series and satellite spin-offs in other countries.
“Citadel,” which made headlines the other week when it was revealed the budget ballooned past $200 million due to costly reshoots, will launch with two episodes on April 28th. The remainder will air weekly through May.
