Amazon has set a deal with Crystal Dynamics to publish the next entry in the “Tomb Raider” video game franchise. It will be Amazon’s first single-player narrative title.
The project is in early development and does not yet have a release date, but will follow the usual pattern of being a multi-platform single-player narrative adventure incorporating exploration, puzzle solving and combat.
The move is interesting as MGM, whom Amazon acquired earlier this year, lost the film rights to the “Tomb Raider” franchise this summer and the planned Alicia Vikander-led sequel was scrapped. The rights now sit with producer Graham King and his GK Films.
Crystal Dynamics has been involved in the past two incarnations of the “Tomb Raider” franchise from the “Tomb Raider: Legend” trilogy from 2006-2008, to the more recent celebrated reboot trilogy that ran from 2013’s “Tomb Raider” to 2015’s “Rise of the Tomb Raider” and 2018’s “Shadow of the Tomb Raider” along with various mobile games.
The new entry is expected to be a continuation/revival of the reboot trilogy.
Amazon recently struck deals to publish games like Smilegate’s “Lost Ark” and Bandai Namco Online’s “Blue Protocol”.
