Amazon MGM Studios has begun development of a live-action TV series adaptation of the “Wolfenstein” video games.
Plot specifics for the series are under wraps, but the show has the briefest of synopsis – “the story of killing Nazis is evergreen”.
The “Wolfenstein” games follow a U.S. WW2 soldier who goes behind enemy lines to fight the Nazis, only to discover they are engaging in dangerous experiments with the occult as part of their war effort.
The original 1980s “Wolfenstein” games were top down titles but 1992’s “Wolfenstein 3D” along with “Doom” and “Quake” became titles that helped popularise first-person shooter video games.
In 2014, the series was reinvented with “Wolfenstein: The New Order” from developer MachineGames, which is set in an alternate history 1960s Europe where the Nazis won the Second World War.
“Station Eleven” showrunner and “The Leftovers” writer/producer Patrick Somerville will be the creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner on the project via his chaoticgood.tv production company. Jonah Nolan, Lisa Joy, James Altman, Jerk Gustafsson and Athena Wickham will executive produce.
It joins multiple game to series adaptations at Amazon alongside currently airing “Fallout” and screen takes on “Mass Effect,” “God of War” and “Warhammer 40,000” all currently in development.
