Earlier this year and after nearly four decades on screens, Australian soap “Neighbours” was officially and abruptly cancelled. The feature-length final episode, which saw the return of the likes of Kylie Minogue and Guy Pearce, aired in late July.
Now in an unexpected twist worthy of a Ramsey Street storyline, Amazon has announced it will resurrect the series with the revitalised version to premiere exclusively on the free Amazon Freevee service in the UK and US, and through Amazon Prime Video in Australia and New Zealand seven days after the free-to-air viewing on its old home of Channel 10.
Four of the show’s regulars have all signed on to return including Stefan Dennis (Paul Robinson), Alan Fletcher (Karl Kennedy), Jackie Woodburne (Susan Kennedy) and Ryan Moloney (Toadie Rebecchi). Shooting will kick off early next year in Australia ahead of a return in late 2023.
As part of the deal, Amazon has also acquired streaming rights to the back catalogue of around 8,900 episodes from previous seasons which will be available through the service.
