Amazon Prime Unveils Dialogue Boost

Amazon Prime Video has announced a new feature that has long been called for in these days of problematic sound mixes that often require subtitles to be turned on to understand it all – a ‘Dialogue Boost’ accessibility feature.

Arriving almost a full year after Amazon Prime rebooted its user interface, the ‘Dialogue Boost’ option offers an AI-based approach allowing viewers to adjust the volume of spoken dialogue without changing the volume of the background music or sound effects.

Essentially it allows the user to adjust on a show-by-show basis. Prime Video boasts that it is “the first global streaming service to offer this feature”.

Only a few Amazon Originals are offering the option at present including “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” and “Harlem”. A few films like “The Big Sick,” “Beautiful Boy” and “Being the Ricardos” also have it.

Users can access the option in the drop-down menu alongside subtitles and audio. Dialogue Boost will be added to more titles throughout the year, including some of Amazon’s biggest series along with more films.

The news comes as a survey of streaming user interfaces over at Variety found Amazon Prime to have the worst user interface of any of the SVOD platforms.
