Amazon Sets Big “Tomb Raider” Franchise Plans

Hot on the heels of the news that Phoebe Waller-Bridge will write and executive produce a new “Tomb Raider” TV series at Amazon, more has been revealed regarding the retail giant’s highly ambitious plans for the franchise.

THR reports that Amazon is teaming with dj2 Entertainment for a massive rights deal that will deliver both a new “Tomb Raider” feature film and at least one more video game in the franchise alongside the newly announced TV series.

Not only that, the plan is for all three of these projects to be interconnected “in a fashion akin to what Marvel has already accomplished” – and that could be just the start. The “Tomb Raider” video game was first announced in December with additional games in the franchise considered likely.

A source for the trade says the pact will be among the largest commitments Amazon has made after its massive spend on “The Lord of the Rings” to get its ‘Rings of Power’ TV series up and running.

Though Waller-Bridge is attached to write the script for the TV series, she is not involved in the film or the game at this point. Waller-Bridge is a fan of the property but is not currently attached to star in that series which has a “greenlight built into the larger Tomb Raider rights deal”.

dj2 Entertainment is also behind the “Tomb Raider” anime series at Netflix which included a two-season order – that is still expected to go ahead. They are also working on screen adaptations of the games “Life Is Strange” and “Disco Elysium”.

Game developer Crystal Dynamics regained control of the rights to the “Tomb Raider” games last year after Embracer completed its acquisition of Square Enix assets.
