Amazon Prime Video is reportedly in negotiations for a live-action TV series based on Sony PlayStation’s critically acclaimed ancient mythology-themed game series “God of War”.

The project hails from “Children of Men” co-writer and “The Expanse” creators/executive producers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby along with “The Wheel of Time” executive producer/showrunner Rafe Judkins. Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions are backing the project.

The “God of War” franchise has been running since the PlayStation 2 era with the first title back in 2005 winning many Game of the Year awards. Two direct sequels in 2007 and 2010 were released to rave reviews.

The games follow Kratos, a Spartan warrior tricked into killing his family by his former master – the Greek god of war Ares. Thus begins a series of events that leads Kratos on a path of vengeance – ultimately slaughtering the entire pantheon of Olympian gods.

In 2018, Santa Monica Studios released “God of War” – a tonally very different and darker revival set years later in which a now older Kratos is a single father raising his son Atreus in the icy lands of the north.

That game, which ties into Norse mythology, scored even more Game of the Year awards back then and had a minor revival in January as a PC port of the game was released to a rapturous response. A follow-up titled “God of War: Ragnorok” hits PS4 and PS5 later this year.

This follows an aggressive push into screen adaptations of gaming content lately. PlayStation Productions released “Uncharted” last month, is filming “The Last of Us” series for HBO, recently announced a “Twisted Metal” series for Peacock, and has a “Ghost of Tsushima” film in early development.

Amazon itself is doubling down in the arena with TV series based on “Fallout” and “Mass Effect” on the way, while Netflix has a new “Resident Evil” TV series on the way and Paramount+ will debut the “Halo” series later this month.
