Amazon Cancels Molina-Led “Three Pines”

Amazon Prime

The Alfred Molina-led, Canada-set mystery series “Three Pines” has been by cancelled by Amazon Prime Video after just one eight-episode season which wrapped on December 23rd.

The news first emerged via social media accounts of showrunner Emilia di Giorlamo, author Louise Penny and actress Elle-Maija Tailfeathers. Amazon subsequently confirmed it won’t be renewing the series to the trades.

Giorlamo said: “I was not involved in the conversations and negotiations around renewal but I have been told Left Bank, Sony & Prime Video all wanted to bring the show back but were unable to reach a mutually beneficial agreement.”

Based on Louise Penny’s best-selling mystery novels, the series followed the cerebral and compassionate Inspector Gamache investigating a series of murders in a picturesque Quebec village. Filming took place in Montreal and Quebec.

The first season covered a span of four mysteries inspired by the books, with two episodes dedicated to each case. It also ended on a cliffhanger with Gamache’s life on the line. Tailfeathers, Sarah Booth and Rossif Sutherland also co-starred.

It’s not known how well the series performed beyond Penny at one point claiming the show had briefly been No. 1 for Amazon Prime Video in the U.S., Canada and the UK.
