Amazon Cancels “Countdown,” “Butterfly”

Amazon Prime Video has opted to cancel two of its recent new action series, which debuted earlier this year – the Daniel Dae Kim-led “Butterfly” and the Jensen Ackles-led “Countdown”.

Both shows are produced internally at Amazon MGM Studios, and both series broke into Nielsen Top 10 for Streaming Originals. “Countdown,” which opted for a weekly release format, was said to be the stronger overall performer of the two.

However, the decision reportedly came down to total global viewership, with overseas audiences just not clicking with the U.S.-centric series.

They join “Motorheads” as three of the six recent freshman shows on the streamer to be axed. Young adult titles “We Were Liars” and “Overcompensating” were renewed, as was the “Bosch” spin-off “Ballard” which has been a hit.

“Countdown” followed a LAPD detective (Ackles) recruited to a secret task force made up of various agents to investigate a murder which leads to a dangerous threat that could kill millions. Eric Dane, Jessica Camacho, Violett Beane, Elliot Knight and Uli Latukefu co-starred.

“Butterfly” was a character-driven spy thriller with Kim playing a highly unpredictable former US intelligence operative living in South Korea whose past comes back to haunt him and is being hunted by a young assassin (Reina Hardesty).
