Amazon & Apple Call Purchasing Truce

Amazon and Apple have quietly turned on a new feature in Prime Video’s apps for Apple devices, at least in the United States.

From today, those using the Prime Video app on Apple TVs and iOS devices like iPhones can buy or rent TV shows and movies using the in-app payment feature.

Prior to the change, Amazon would not allow you to rent or buy content on the Prime Video app due to the Apple app store’s mandatory 30% cut on all in-app purchases.

Prices do not appear to have been raised to account for the 30% fee, and the app appears to use Amazon’s own billing if you have an existing card on file with Amazon. Otherwise it uses Apple In-App Purchases.

In any case Apple has since confirmed that it has entered Amazon Prime Video into an established program for ‘premium’ video providers. This means including integration of Amazon with the Apple TV app, AirPlay 2 support, universal search, Siri support and, where applicable, single or zero sign-on.

Amazon’s Prime Video has been on the streaming device since December 2017.
