Beleaguered exhibitor AMC Entertainment has become a hot commodity this morning following a report in the UK’s The Daily Mail indicating that Amazon may be interested in acquiring the theater chain.
The report is not confirmed, both AMC Entertainment and Amazon won’t comment on speculation, and Deadline claims their sources say that there are no talks.
AMC, which owns Odeon in the UK, carries significant debt which has made it vulnerable due to the major business downturn and has fuelled speculation about potential bankruptcy. AMC’s majority owner, Chinese real estate giant Wanda, has denied those claims.
Exhibitors continue to talk about a late June-July timeframe for cinemas to return to operation – albeit at reduced capacity with social distancing and other precautionary measures in place.
