Almodovar Drops “A Manual for Cleaning Women”

Sony Pictures Classics

Celebrated “Pain and Glory” and “Volver” director Pedro Almodóvar has confirmed that he has dropped out of directing the film adaptation of Lucia Berlin’s 2016 short story collection “A Manual for Cleaning Women”.

The book features 43 stories centered around working women in different types of demanding jobs. The film was to have been his first English-language film, and the veteran Spanish filmmaker says the decision was due to him feeling not being ready for this kind of ambitious project:

“It has been a very painful decision for me. I have dreamt of working with Cate for such a long time. Dirty Films has been so generous with me this whole time and I was blinded by excitement, but unfortunately, I no longer feel able to fully realize this film.”

Dirty Films and New Republic are currently searching for a new director to take over and are committed to the project, while Oscar winner Cate Blanchett is still attached as the leading star along with producing.
