“Alita 2,” “Star Wars” & “F1” Sequel Talk

A few brief sequel updates today from the people involved in those projects.

Filmmaker James Cameron has offered a surprisingly encouraging update regarding a sequel to 2019’s “Alita: Battle Angel”. Speaking with Empire, he says he not only wants to do a second film with Robert Rodriguez, but plans are getting underway as soon as his press commitments for “Avatar: Fire and Ash” finish:

“I appreciate the loyalty of the Alita fans. Robert Rodriguez and I have sworn a blood oath to do at least one more Alita movie. In fact, we’re thinking of an architecture that bridges to a third film, but we’ll be satisfied if we can make one more. And we’re making progress on that. Now that I have a home in Austin, Texas, about three miles from [Robert’s] place, I think we’ll probably get more serious about that as soon as I wrap the mix here in a few weeks.”

The first film grossed over $400 million worldwide, but the costly budget has made the sequel a prohibitively expensive possibility.

Next, “F1” director Joseph Kosinski has given a brief update to Variety addressing a follow-up to the sports drama movie “F1” starring Brad Pitt, Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, and Javier Bardem.

That film was a critical and commercial success, and speculations about a potential sequel have been circulating for a while. He says right now they are:

“We’re dreaming up what the next chapter for Sonny Hayes would be, and for APXGP… But based on the reactions from around the world to this movie, it’s something that people want to see. I’ll be happy to go back and do it because we had so much fun making this one.”

Finally, actor John Boyega was asked at Liverpool Comic Con (via DF) about a potential return to the role of Finn alongside Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron. Boyega says he’s open to returning to the role, but only on film:

“Me and Oscar are very stubborn and we believe the bromance should only be on the big screen…It has to be a movie and obviously a great script… So if I get those combinations, who knows.”

For now there are no plans for their characters to return.
